Rep. Nan Hayworth’s flack resigns over ‘acid’ remark
Kate Nocera, Politico – Freshman Rep. Nan Hayworth’s campaign spokesman Jay Townsend has resigned after remarking on Facebook that people should “hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector.”
Townsend made the remark last week on a Facebook page called the “NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Civil Discussion Center.” He was responding to another commenter and said Democratic women Senators who advocated for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act were hypocrites.
“question today…when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector,” he wrote. Townsend linked to a FreeBeacon.com article that reported female senators pay their female staff members less than male aides.
The comments prompted one of Hayworth’s Democratic opponents, Dr. Richard Becker, to call for Townsend to step down.
